Happy Founders Day to the Ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Most people that know me are familiar with my affiliation with DST. I am proud to be a member of the sorority because it is rich in history and as an organization, we do a lot of service in the community. I am Alpha Eta Made, Virginia State University, Spring ’92 and it was through being a Delta that I learned how to step. Yes I have danced all of my life but it is just something about stepping that makes me feel good. Its making up beats and rhythms using your body as an instrument. It’s putting on a dynamic show when competing in a step show, and it is performing and stepping so hard that when you finish, you almost want to pass out. Stepping in my first step show at VSU and at DST Regional and National step shows (yes our team won!) was the main reason why I wanted to be a choreographer. Since that time, I have hung up my performance step shoes and now focus on choreographing and teaching (I’m no fool I will step for a check), but I am so glad that my introduction to stepping was by way of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Hip Hop, Ballet, House, Salsa, Dancehall, Jazz are all great but Stepping is my Roots!
Here’s a snippet throwback from the New York City Step Correct. Can you guess who I am?
Until next time…
Peace, Love, Dance & Design
